Energy Reduction
The real key to counteracting climate change is using less
energy. Energy reduction means less consumption of fossil fuels and
thus fewer CO2 emissions.
Reducing your energy consumption can be achieved in different ways,
depending on your organisation and the chain of which it is part. A
number of measures are relatively easy to take and have direct
results.
Energy reduction can be achieved by:
- Using lighting efficiently, and using more energy-efficient lighting;
- Insulating buildings, and heating more efficiently;
- Implementing a car leasing policy that involves energy labels and/or maximum carbon emissions per car type;
- Video-conferencing instead of plane trips;
- Using computer technology and web hosting efficiently.
An important thing to remember is that even if you are already
using sustainable energy, energy reduction is still useful. It
doesn't just save money; it also ensures that more people can use
the (unfortunately) still scarce supply of sustainable energy.
Energy reduction of production processes is a more complex matter.
Besides reducing electricity and gas consumption, this also
involves, for example, reducing the use of water and other natural
resources. Significant reductions can often be achieved by using
sustainable, biodegradable resources, by re-using and recycling, by
reducing waste cycles, etc.
